There's a reason Japanese screen painters kept returning to cranes; rooms still respond. Two red-crowned cranes stand in shallow water against a warm gold ground, with pale blossom drifting in from above.

Put it up and the room slows down. The gold reads as warm colour, not glitter, and the dark tail feathers stop the whole thing floating off.

It works best on a calmer wall — above a sideboard, in a hallway, or as the main piece in a living room. Give it space either side rather than crowding it.

Pair it with oak or walnut, linen upholstery, stoneware in cream tones, and aged brass fittings. Plaster or off-white walls let the gold sing.
