Think of it as Vermeer with less reverence and better instincts. A side-lit Dutch room — woman at the keyboard, gentleman beside her, checkered floor catching the light from tall leaded windows.

Put it on the wall and the room feels older and quieter in a good way. The deep navy floor and rich red rug pull the eye in slowly, and the cream wall in the painting echoes whatever pale wall you hang it on.

Best above a writing desk, a console in a hallway, or in a study where you actually sit and read. Eye-level, not too high.

Pairs well with walnut or oak, leather, brass, deep reds and navies, persian rugs and shelves of books.

Don't crowd it with bright modern prints. It needs space to breathe. Looks especially good framed in oak or black.
